Through A Glass Darkly: 1 Corinthians 13:12

Angel-of-Death-58014

While the mayor of Mecca is bent on destroying the city’s cultural and material legacy, building the infrastructure for a city of the future, the residents of Senegal are fighting one another in the streets for potable water.  In the meantime the folks in the Bay of Bengal are cleaning up what’s left after Tropical Cyclone Phailin, whose speeds were as fast as a Formula One race car, just as our friends in the US Midwest are still digging out from their early October surprise, while Canada is making plans to bury its nuclear wastes at the bottom of Lake Huron.  Meanwhile, the universities in Greece are getting ready to close their doors, just as Obama and the brat pack are considering more ways to fuck-over the American people.  Seems like the only safe haven is here in Siberia!

I no longer know what’s real and what’s propaganda.  Of course, we now know that in America the ways and means of totalitarian control (C. Hedges) are through distraction and propaganda, i.e., marketing.  Not that the world isn’t cooperating in this effort; it is! I mean even Mother Nature is getting in on the action.  But the real tools of manipulation and control are spectacles, carried out by our media, our pundits, and our pitchmen – viz., politicians.  And oh! How effective it is!  Our imperious bosses have mastered the art of deception and sleight of hand, the art of the deal, the art of systematic distraction.  You cannot boot-up your computer, open your smart phone, click on the car radio, or turn on the 72” flat-screen at home, without hearing and seeing the ongoing saga, the melodramatic displays that bind us to the narrative, and blind us to what is really happening out there or even in here. Even a typhoon, a cyclone, a Syrian revolution, a debt crisis, and an Iranian olive branch, all are presented as high melodrama, the events themselves shaped by the media stories about them.  Never are we allowed to see the man behind the curtain, never to understand what is really transpiring in the world around us… We never are given to understand the roots of such crises or events; we simply look out onto the screens of our life, as through a glass darkly.  We are amused and bemused, entertained and detained by the passing menagerie, like the floats in a Macy’s Day parade.

We view life as a series of scenes, screenplays, just like our reality TV shows have taught us, not as lived events; everything is an extension of the dramatic art; life imitates… life! It is all spectacle. If the cameras are rolling, then its show time as usual.  Our attention and our concern, reduced to somnambulistic watching of the chaos, as remotely as alien observers, assuming that we play no part, no role in this drama, and that our actions and lifestyles have done nothing to engender or foment these events, that the world turns as we passively and perversely look on like voyeurs.  We sleep walk through our daily lives, as the masters of the universe continue to prepare the movie sets, people the anchor desks, relocate the journalists, prepare the cameras, the ready the makeup artists, and rearrange the deck chairs.  Lights! Camera! Action!

Like Dorothy, some of us are curious and really want to find our way back home; but the men pulling the levers are doing their damnedest to keep us in the dark, to deny and obfuscate what is increasingly obvious, so again, we only see, as through a glass darkly.  The terms of the agreement have been laid out in detail.  We will poorly train you (for money), barely feed and house you (for your labor), entertain you (for your obedience), and protect you (with the blood of your sons and daughters).  But whatever you do… DON’T question our authority, our judgment, or our motives… for we know better.  Thus Spake the hegemony; thus speak our politicians and their corporate sponsors.  And so the distraction machine ratchets up… FOX, CNN, CNBC, NPR, HuffPost, Al Jazeera, your local news network affiliates, their gazettes, journals and radio stations, Madison Avenue, Wall Street, Hollywood, Silicon Valley, and Bentonville Arkansas!  The control and brain washing is, literally, MIND NUMBING!!!

It’s all about consumer choice they tell us… give the folks what they want; better yet, tell them what they want… pinker salmon, redder tomatoes, bigger tits, faster cars, more security… ok, we’ve got it.  Just leave everything to us, and sit down and shut up.  And the new Russians are lining up just like us, just like we did, their old enemy back West; and they love the spectacle, especially prancing around in all their new finery.

“Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends… We’re so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside. There behind the glass lies a real blade of grass.” (ELP)…  It is the one and only global Curriculum of the West.  But end it must, and certainly it will.  Watch for it soon… on your local evening newscast, delivered by your very friendly and sexy anchorwoman.  See you there, through the glass. Darkly!

And like Taibbi’s proverbial great vampire squid, DoD and all it’s associated minions have sucked the life blood out of the US economy such that eliminating it now would certainly kill the host. As a long term strategy for command and control you have to admit it was brilliant. The world-wide Nazi fascist state is alive and well and hiding in plain sight behind the red, white, and blue. The Terminator has now reached critical mass. Nothing can stop it now other than itself.

      • Disaffected says:

Just to add, I’d look for another shock doctrine event or two as the budget stalemate continues to heat up (currently no end in sight and we enter default on the bills mode on the 17th). Nothing keeps the sheep in line like a little state-sponsored false flag drama. Look for a stop gap measure to keep the troops paid as well if it goes on through the end of the month. Don’t wanna piss of the dudes with weapons and the demonstrated willingness to use them. Or maybe they do? Could this be the beginning of an armed coup d’etat to oust Obama and the ‘Democratic Socialist traitors’ like I predicted only slightly tongue in cheek a few years back? Better get some popcorn and stay tuned. Banana Republic here we come!

I sense a quickening of late. I think the budget stalemates (there’s actually two separate issues involved, the ultimate US Federal debt limit and FY14 appropriations) are focusing things a bit. Things could get VERY interesting shortly.

      jackson pollack said
“Modern art to me is nothing more than the expression of contemporary aims of the age we’re living in… All cultures have had means and techniques of expressing their immediate aims – the Chinese, the Renaissance, all cultures.’
of course he was talking about his time, but dealing with the influence of the advances in technical sciences, social changes; but using the techniques of the art of his time.
the question is, what does our contemporary art say about us?

“Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a first-person shooter video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is a stand-alone expansion to the 2012 video game Far Cry 3 and the 8th overall installment in the franchise. The game, a satire of 1980s action films, takes place on a retro-futuristic open world island crawling with evil, with players assuming the action role of eye-patched cyborg protagonist Sergeant Rex Power Colt.”

Last minute “deal” has apparently been struck (which only delays things for another couple months), but no word on whether the House of Crazies will support it. Welcome to the new Fascist Terrorist World Order, where even routine politics is now a hostage game. No matter what happens, you have to conclude that the US has now officially gone off the rails. The fact that these guys control nuclear weapons and drones should put a chill in everyone’s spine.

    • the Heretick says:

geez DA, you are echoing Democratic talking points, “terrorists”, “hostage taking”, let’s see, what’s next, “putting a gun to someone’s head”?
whether we like it or not the Pukes are elected representatives, all funding originates in the House.
as a lifelong leftist i cannot believe the Asses passed a warmed over Puke Plan for the ACA, first cousin to Romney’s Mass. plan, what a sick cruel joke.
don’t get caught up in the Kabuki my man, nothing has changed, we’re just going to go another $ Trillion in debt.
the real travesty here is that bond buyers make about 3 cents off of every dollar in circulation due to the fiat money system.
and hey, not to mention the loot for whoever holds our debt.

you surprise me, i didn’t think you were so involved, this whole cake is baked, two wings of the corp. party. i actually think the tea party types are doing us a favor highlighting the facts about our insane economic situation, sometimes being confronted by a real crazy person can snap you back to sanity.

“But certainly for the present age, which prefers the sign to the thing signified, the copy to the original, representation to reality, the appearance to the essence… illusion only is sacred, truth profane. Nay, sacredness is held to be enhanced in proportion as truth decreases and illusion increases, so that the highest degree of illusion comes to be the highest degree of sacredness.”

Unfortunately, my entire income, like a lot of people’s these days (many of whom don’t even realize it) is almost entirely dependent on the idea that the US Federal government will actually honor its obligations, and not unilaterally default on them for entirely disingenuous, partisan political aims by a relative handful of decidedly political charlatans. Yes, I realize that this is how it’s probably going to end in any case, and probably pretty damn soon at that (Jan 15 I l believe is the next target date), but I damn sure don’t have to like it. Although it will be some small comfort watching the red state supporters of the political nut class that supports this shit in the first place (which is to say my entire midwest extended family) get theirs as well.

And no, Heretick, the fucking Tea Baggers ain’t doing ANYONE any favors, save for their rich, corporate sponsors. I’m surprised you’ve been taken in by their shit!

        • kulturcritic says:

          There…heretick… take that!

        • the Heretick says:

” taken in by their shit!”
my goodness, i haven’t been taken in by anybody’s bullshit, i just look at it as the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. the Donkey, the asses, they have no intention of reforming anything, christ, it was slick willie who signed the Commodities Futures Modernization Act, whatever they called it; then Obomber was actually considering Summers for the Fed!
          the usual suspects.
the pukes tell a lie on one level, capitalism is good for everybody, it’s a rising tide, a win-win, what a load of bullshit.
the asses? they tell us the same thing, a level playing field, work hard, play by the rules, how many times have we heard these words?
bullshit, labor pays for it all, even hunter-gatherers had to work for their sustenance.

they both lie, only difference is how many layers you have to peel back to discover the lies. the asses change nothing, they just want those who work to pay even more to support those who don’t, the rich aren’t paying for squat, we know that, then who pays?

then we are supposed to feel virtuous i guess? well, i don’t need govt. imposed virtuousness, i went to school to learn that, crippled me for life, i’m halfway serious about that. so, we create our own “city of god”, we usher in the atheist, scientific, rational millennium? good luck with that.

the christian eschatology runs way deep in the national zeitgeist.

          • kulturcritic says:

“the rich” what a fucking loaded term, Htk. Who are the rich? Do you mean the guys who pay their taxes even though they are pulling down a million a year; or are you talking the super rich, who have it all sheltered and obfuscated somehow

            • the Heretick says:

i’m thinking of “The Rich and the Super-Rich” as in Lundbergs book.
              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rich_and_the_Super-Rich
The Rich and the Super-Rich. A Study in the Power of Money Today is a study by Ferdinand Lundberg conducted in 1968. In this study, Lundberg tries to bring his findings from America’s Sixty Families (1937) up to date and into the field of elite studies. He critically examines recent studies in the concentration of wealth in the USA, only to conclude that the majority of the “new rich” are the inheritors of the big fortunes studied in the earlier book. But the rate of concentration has increased. The Lampman study (1962), the Michigan study (1964), and the Federal Banking lists (1962) all point to the fact that a little more than one percent of the households in the US control 65% of the invested capital. Lundberg concludes that this elite of little more than 500.000 people has a decisive influence in the economic system. Throughout, Lundberg relies on studies by others. His study has been superseded by more recent books on wealth and income. Tables in the appendix list top incomes and top wealth owners.

we know the true power in our country is inherited, we have a landed gentry every bit as unassailable as the old monarchies in Europe, oh sure, they don’t rule by decree anymore, but they are still fabulously wealthy, with the exception of Mother Russia, where they dealt with the problem in other ways………………..

getting interesting isn’t it? that’s the rich i am talking about.

    • Disaffected says:

I’m no fan of Democrats OR Repubes, but hostage taking is exactly what this was. You can’t just tie up mandatory funding bills based on whatever law you happen not to like (and I’m no fan of the ACA either). And don’t buy into the “debt” myth either. US currency is issued AS debt, although it needn’t have to be (end the Fed!). Retire the debt and you retire/shrink the money supply. Think there’s not enough to go around now? Well then, let’s retire some more of it (mostly poor people’s) and see where we’ll be then. Notice how debt hawks NEVER discuss what an appropriate level of debt WOULD BE? They don’t have a clue, they just want to use the topic to cut entitlements in the form of the social safety net for the working class, thus keeping more for their fat-asses. How much you wanna bet Ted Cruz and your OK Senators are all living large?

      • the Heretick says:

        i’m sure they are.
whenever fiat money comes up it reminds me of someone trying to explain ten-dimensional string theory, and i think they want it that way.
once again, reason i changed my name was i don’t believe in any marxist solutions anymore, i’ve lost the true faith.
i don’t trust the shenanigans they pull with the money supply, it serves the upper crust, there has to be a better way.
to be really cold-blooded about things, something i’ve learned from my kids, there is truth to the puke talking point about subsidizing poverty, the more subsidies, the more people, the more poverty.
until the economic system is somehow reformed to curtail corp. profits, to strike at the root of the problem, we will always be playing catch up, the treadmill will just be sped up, the working class running in place.
resource shrinkage is going to force this issue, i think the budget problems reflect this, this whole snowball started rolling after the oil shock of ’73.

i think eventually our country will break up, i really do, and i’m not so sure it would be a bad thing, nor am i sure where i would want to wind up.

what worries me about modern society is the increasing artificiality, something i can’t quite put my finger on, it seems we are losing touch with what it means to be human.
some would say we are evolving, but it could be the other way around.

        • Disaffected says:

Bottom line, this is all about spoils for rich people, which of course includes you and me too (as well as Sandy) in the final analysis. But the idea that the relatively poor people should willingly flush their status in favor of the disingenuous rich at this point and then THANK THEM for the privilege strikes me as just stupid beyond comprehension.

What worries ME most about modern society is not that most of its members are so ignorant about what’s happening to them, it’s that they’re so willingly complicit in the matter when the information to make better decisions is so CLEARLY out there.

Almost makes me want to side with the rich and say you dumb MFs just ain’t worth the GD effort!

  6. the Heretick says:

just woke up, had a bad dream, i was an old man, and there was another old man.
we were in a creaky old house, i was upset, which i am a lot in my dreams, the cause of which? who knows? past trauma, current trauma.
anyhow, this old geezer and i, were looking out the window at the world, and i’m saying this is crazy what the worlds become, and i say “come here, i want to show you something” and i take him over to a little short door with no handle, i have to pry it open from the edge with my fingernails.
inside of this room is a tableau of everyday objects, old floor radio, easy chair, glass objects, a throw rug, completely furnished, and i say to whoever it was that was there,
“every one of these things was made by a human being, every one of these things was touched by a human hand, someone put a part of themselves into every one of these objects”
don’t ask me what this means, hell if i know, but i think it’s a big part of our problems.

    • Disaffected says:

Actually, you DO know and you explained it right there. But don’t confuse things by supporting T-Party nut bags who sell you one thing in the guise of another. As in “I’ll return you to yesteryear (almost always pitched in terms of values), if you’ll only vote for me.” Whereupon they magically return to the “real world” and fuck you up the ass just as they were pre-programmed to do by their capitalist overlords in the first place. When I see Ted Cruz (the current T-Bagger mouthpiece du jour) spewing his stupid shit, I’m reminded of nothing so much as an updated Jerry Falwell or similar big box pseudo-Christian shitbag.

Are the Dems any better? Certainly not! But that’s no reason to give up hope altogether and just give in. Remember, it’s ALL just an illusion from the start, and THAT’S what they’re hoping for in the first place.

      • the Heretick says:

if you go back and look at what i said, i simply said ” i actually think the tea party types are doing us a favor highlighting the facts about our insane economic situation,” i never said i agreed with their political philosophy, in fact if you look at just about everything i ever wrote i think you would see that i don’t. here’s the thing, i’ve touched on it before, coming from a large family i have siblings who have been, or are, members of the democratic party, the republican party, the green party, the libertarian party, and yes, actual card carrying CPUSA, i’m not talking voter registration, i’m talking joining the party, going to meetings, not me mind you, too much like church.
the point is that i have argued political philosophy with those near and dear for decades, i know they aren’t horrible people, not dragons, don’t breathe fire, they are all pretty normal, go to work, etc. here’s another link
        http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/10/18/bernie-sanders-tells-ed-schultz-southern-democrats-are-tired-of-being-abandoned-by-the-party/
i invite you to peruse the comments on that thread, see the pejorative terms used to describe the poor ignorant southerners, benighted idiots, and then think about the ideas you have heard from me, one of “them”.
1- a constitutional amendment to strip citizenship from corporations (this just might lessen their influence upon our elections)
2- the complete outlawing of credit default swaps
3- the restriction of commodity trading to entities who actually partake in the business (food companies, food storage companies, etc.)
4- a restriction on the number of trades allowed on commodities and a cap on the profit allowed (a twist on Canadian grain equalization boards)
5- strict adherence to the congressional power to declare war
these reforms would go a long way to improve the lot of the poor, but wait, there’s more!
6- a requirement for corps. chartered in this country to employ 90% of their workforce in this country (60% of “chinese” imports are produced by subsidiaries of US corps.)
        7- single payer health care
8- establishment of guaranteed employment under govt. contract for those who need it (much like joining the service)
9- 2 years of schooling beyond high school (much like germany)
        10- legalization of the weed

i have run these points by one of the most rabid tea party types i know, an AR-15 owning, Agenda 21 opposing, capital R republican, who just happens to drive a Volvo (does that mean he’s a closet liberal?), and he had no problems with any of them, except for magic number 7.

this is why the democrats missed a golden opportunity. suppose Ms. Pelosi had broken form and abandoned politics (she’s getting a bit long in the tooth anyhow), and had come on national teevee with a list of some of our 1,000 plus overseas military bases to close and the cost savings to be realized? how much could that shake things up?
just for comparison, the Chinese opened their first overseas base in 2011
        http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/china-to-open-its-first-military-base-abroad-in-indian-ocean-157282

anyhow, me being a sensitive new age man, i was truly hurt that you could even think for a minute that i had anything in common with these ignorant rednecks round these parts. 😉

this building trust and loyalty, it can be a rough business.

All those worlds are disconnect and others. The shutdown and posturing has no connection and no interest in connecting with real lives of real people. Images on a screen are untouchable and serve to numb our thoughts and coat our neurons in a form of digital dementia. Spectacle appears and fades and is presented as of equal import…Detroit defaults! Brady leads the Pats to victory!

Yet real realities exist. First Nation women in Canada protest fracking to protect drinking water–real!–and the government responds with camo-clad snipers–unreal!. People struggle to find food. To find medicine. Others work to grow real food and extract themselves from the illness-promoting culture.

    The divide of Other widens.

Unfortunately, in the world we actually live in (7B people in a world that naturally supports maybe 1B), shutdown DOES matter. That’s just the sad, REAL, fact.

And although many of us in the first world like to pontificate on our experiences of “the other” in the comfort of our first worldliness, the reality is, we might not be quite so expansive taken down a notch or two in our perspective. Which, more and more, I feel we are ALL about to be.

it’s called class solidarity, and it is not achieved thru writing off those who would be your natural allies, a lesson the supposedly intellectual class in our country has yet to take to heart. reforms and revolutions need some sort of direction, usually provided by people who have thought long and hard about these matters, and rarely from the ruling class, but usually from discontents among the intelligentsia. but sometimes, sometimes, someone comes along like Zapata, and of course they usually meet a bad end.
